Finding a car that is suited to your needs is often much harder than it might initially seem.

There’s so much to think about during the process - do you want a hatchback, an estate or an SUV? Are you looking for a five or a seven-seater model? Do you need larger than average boot space for transporting hobby equipment?

The aesthetics and performance alone aren’t the only considerations to make, but rather how practical the car will be for your personal circumstances.

When to consider boot space

Boot space should be considered in almost all instances, even if you don’t have children or pets. The boot space can usually always accommodate a full grocery shop, but more often than not, it will have some emergency kit in there too.

You have children or pets

If you have children, you will want to know that there are ISOFIX points in the rear, as well as plenty of boot space to accommodate pushchairs and nappy bags.

When travelling with more than one child, you will need to factor in the space a car seat takes up when anchored in the rear seats.

If you have pets, a larger boot space would be beneficial as you can fit a pet guard, protecting the occupants of the car from a loose animal. It also provides your pet with their own space so they will be more relaxed during journeys.

You may be travelling on long journeys with your pet so having plenty of space for them to move about is important.

You take regular holidays

If you are thinking of going on holiday, you should ensure your boot has enough space to accommodate a suitcase at the very least.

When you are heading away on a staycation, your car will often be filled with items to keep you going during your trip, from clothes to toys and cooking equipment. These items need to be secured and the boot space is the best place for this. It also ensures you have a clear view out of the rear windscreen.

You have a hobby

You should also think about your hobbies and whether you have any bulky or oversized equipment that you need to accommodate. Watersports in particular come with lots of equipment, from boards to wetsuits which you will likely want to keep out of the main cabin area, especially if they are damp.

Most outdoor hobbies come with bulky equipment, which might be safety or protective items that need to be transported in your vehicle.

There are accessories you can purchase that allow you to place oversized items on the roof or onto the back of your vehicle to keep the cabin area clutter free which might be beneficial if you need to transport multiple passengers too.
