Best Cars for City Driving

City driving can come with a host of inconveniences, from tight city streets to continuous traffic light systems and slow moving vehicles.

Whether you live or work in a city, it’s important your car reflects your lifestyle and if driving round the city streets is the majority of your travels, you want a car that can easily navigate tight streets and offer economical driving even when standing still in traffic.

What cars to consider for city driving

Compact cars are one of the best options for city driving as they offer reduced volume, meaning they can park in smaller spaces, zip comfortably between lanes and use less fuel on short journeys.

The compact Hyundai i10 offers plenty of technology features as standard alongside a range of safety and driver assist features, designed to offer complete peace of mind in busy cities.

Despite it being a small hatchback, it has a 252 litre boot space which can easily accommodate a pram or stroller. The width of the Hyundai i10 is 166cm and a standard stroller, once folded down, is around 109cm. You can also fold down the rear seats for additional boot space.

The Citroen C1 is also an incredibly compact hatchback, with a unique and stylish design. The design of the C1 is made to fit seamlessly into any city and comes in a range of colour options to suit your requirements.

The large roof of the Citroen C1 5 door version is a soft top and available in bi-tone colour combinations for a stylish offering. The Airscape Soft Top can be opened to offer the feeling of being in the open air, even while travelling in urban environments.

Electric city cars

Another option is Hybrid cars as they are the most economical option for those doing quick journeys every day, as they offer ranges up to 50 miles, meaning you may not even need to use the petrol reserves if you don’t travel over that range. Hybrid cars work by charging the battery as the car is in motion using an electric motor and a petrol engine. There is no need to plug in a hybrid car, meaning they are significantly less hassle.

Hybrid cars can be charged to full for as little as £5, providing significant cost savings over petrol or diesel engines and drivers don’t get ‘range anxiety’ like they do with Electric Vehicles as there is always the petrol reserve. The Kona Hybrid is a stylish SUV offering plenty of safety and technology features as an economical SUV.

For those who don’t need the space of an SUV, the Hyundai IONIQ Hybrid is a saloon style car, designed to accommodate the whole family whilst still offering that executive feel. The 10.5” infotainment system offers complete connectivity whereas the 7” Drivers Supervision Cluster provides complete peace of mind with the safety features that include Blind Spot Warning and Lane Follow Assist.

Electric Cars are also another economically friendly option for those needing to make short journeys, as they offer low running and charging costs. Electric cars can be charged for as little as £6 at a public charging station and the maintenance costs are low due to the number of parts compared to a petrol or diesel engine. The Kona Electric SUV, although larger than a compact hatchback, offers economical driving and an incredibly stylish design, packed with technology features as standard.

Consider Hybrid for longer journeys

For those who may need to do longer journeys at the weekend, a Plug in Hybrid would be the ideal option, keeping journeys short and economical during the week and extending the range using the petrol reserves over the weekend. The Hyundai IONIQ Plug in Hybrid hatchback boasts 39 mile range which means you can utilise the electric charge during short journeys to work or to the shop, but have the ability to use your petrol reserves from the 1.6l engine for journeys over 39 miles. The journeys you make below 39 mile range, using the electric charge, will be emission free, reducing your impact on the environment.
