Why it's important to consider the dimensions of a car

When the time comes to buying a new car, one of the important considerations, but something lots of people overlook, is the dimensions of the car.

Whilst it might not seem like the most exciting aspect of searching for a new vehicle, it certainly is important, especially if you live in space constrained areas or will need to transport larger items such as pushchairs on a regular basis.

It’s often easy to visualise whether a car will fit into a certain space or whether you will be able to place certain items into the boot space, but what if you decide to complete your search online?

We’ve outlined the dimensions of Citroen cars so you can make an informed decision.

Boot Capacity

Citroen C1

196 litres

Citroen C3

Citroen 3 Aircross

410 litres

Citroen C4 Aircross/ E-C4

380 litres

Citroen C5 Aircross

580 litres

Citroen Grand C4 SpaceTourer

165 litres

Citroen Berlingo/ E-Berlingo

775 litres

Citroen SpaceTourer/ E-SpaceTourer

4.95m or 5.3m

700 litres

It might be an assumption that the larger the dimensions of the vehicle, the larger the boot space, but that isn’t always the case.

As we can see, the Citroen Berlingo offers a large amount of boot space, but the dimensions of the vehicle doesn’t differ greatly from other models.

With this in mind, it’s important to establish what your needs and requirements are – do you need more boot space but less cabin space, or do you rarely use the boot and therefore would benefit more from additional cabin space.

The Citroen SpaceTourer has the best of both worlds – a larger size meaning there’s more cabin space, but the boot capacity is also large enough to accommodate most items.

Why consider dimensions of a Citroen car?

We understand that the dimensions of a car mean very little when we drill down to the numbers alone, but when we consider these dimensions in terms of physical objects, it becomes more relevant to our everyday lives.

For example, a standard foldable buggy pushchair can be as wide as 1.1m (when folded), so this would either need to fit into the boot space or the rear passenger area. This should fit comfortably into all Citroen models, including the smallest in the range, the Citroen C1.

When we start to look at larger items such as suitcases, which can have a length of up to 0.8m, once you have a few of these in the car, it becomes incredibly cramped. You don’t want to force the passengers into a corner and safety is also a priority when it comes to carry unsecured cargo.

If you travel regularly, either abroad or around the UK, this might be a consideration to make when looking for your next car.

Consider an automatic tailgate

Although size is important when it comes to boot space, you may also want to consider an automatic tailgate, especially if you have a young family or a hectic lifestyle.

Automatic tailgates allow you to open the boot with just a swift movement of your foot underneath the rear bumper as long as your car key is within a certain distance of the car, such as in your pocket or handbag.

Not all Citroen models have this feature though, so it’s got to be something that is desired. Citroen models that have this feature include Citroen C4 SpaceTourer and the Citroen C5 Aircross.
